National Basics. For All.
We don't have them.
Here's how we get them:
None of us have clean air. US neighborhoods are burdened by fine particles of air pollution emitted by cars, factories, wildfires and dusty agricultural activities, known to researchers as PM2.5...and it is killing us. We can and must do better.
None of us have clean tap water. Multiple investigations into US drinking water have found widespread contamination of harmful stuff like lead and arsenic, exceeding so-called "safe levels." A real nation must provide clean water to its citizens. Permanently. This is non-negotiable.
None of us have clean food. Our food systems in the US don't begin with our safety and longevity in mind, our American food system contains thousands of chemicals that have not been proven safe and many that are banned in other countries. A serious nation delivers outstanding food of the absolute highest quality to everyone. Period.
Well over half a million people experienced homelessness in the U.S. in 2023. That number represents a record-high tally and a 12 percent increase over 2022. A real Nation provides safe housing for its citizens. Housing is a human right, recognized around the globe, but here in the US, tenants know that “the rent is too damn high,” and the growing encampments we see on our streets are a result of that. Our country’s pandemic response - ultimately postponing an eviction avalanche - showed us that when we treat housing as the human right it is, we can make a real difference. But today, with those pandemic measures gone, the avalanche is hitting, and our country is failing to meet its obligation to its people to ensure this right, even as we understand that children make up one-third (33%) of the total homeless population. This is unacceptable.
